Alberta's AI funding landscape has been active in 2026. In March, PrairiesCan announced federal support for Alberta businesses enhancing AI technologies and competing in global markets. In May, PrairiesCan followed with $6.8 million for five Alberta AI projects under the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative. That program continues to accept expressions of interest — making this one of the more accessible active funding streams for Alberta businesses with an AI focus.

This article covers what's available to Alberta small businesses for AI adoption and development in 2026, from provincial vouchers to federal RAII funding. Always verify program details and intake status at the primary sources below before applying — programs change.

PrairiesCan Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative (RAII)

The Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative is a federal program delivered by Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan) with $33.8 million committed over five years to support AI development and adoption across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Alberta has been an active focus: two separate announcements in 2026 (March and May) have directed funding to Alberta AI projects.

The RAII supports AI commercialization, AI integration across priority sectors (including energy, agriculture, and manufacturing), and building AI capability in Prairie businesses. It accepts expressions of interest on a rolling basis — applicants are encouraged to submit as soon as possible rather than waiting for defined intake windows.

To start the process, contact PrairiesCan directly at 1-888-338-9378 or visit prairiescanda.gc.ca. The process begins with an expression of interest that is assessed by regional staff before a full application is structured.

Alberta Innovates Vouchers

Alberta Innovates is the provincial innovation agency and offers two accessible voucher programs for Alberta businesses:

  • Micro Vouchers (up to $10,000) — Rolling intake, providing quick access to expert services. These can fund specialized AI consulting, technical assessments, or short-term expert engagements to help a business assess and implement AI tools. The rolling intake makes this particularly accessible — there's no fixed deadline to work around.
  • Standard Vouchers (up to $100,000) — For more substantial projects including R&D, IP development, prototyping, or AI commercialization work. These require a more detailed project scope and involve an assessment process.

Alberta Innovates vouchers are designed to connect businesses with the expertise they need, not just to fund technology purchases. For a business at an early stage of AI adoption, the Micro Voucher is a practical starting point. Visit albertainnovates.ca for current eligibility requirements and to start an application.

Federal Programs Available in Alberta

NRC IRAP AI Assist is available to Alberta businesses and funds AI integration for eligible SMEs. The program is advisor-led through the National Research Council — you connect with an Industrial Technology Advisor in Alberta who assesses your project. Contact NRC IRAP at 1-877-994-4727 or nrc.canada.ca.

SR&ED tax credits apply equally in Alberta for businesses developing AI technology. Budget 2025 doubled the refundable credit cap to $2.1 million annually for CCPCs. Alberta does not have a provincial SR&ED credit (unlike some other provinces), so only the federal credit applies. See our SR&ED and AI guide for eligibility details.

PrairiesCan Business Scale-up and Productivity (BSP) is a separate stream from RAII and can fund AI commercialization, export readiness, and productivity-improving AI implementation for Alberta businesses beyond the startup stage. Funding can include hiring, technology infrastructure, and market expansion. Visit prairiescanda.gc.ca for current program availability.

Alberta's AI Ecosystem: AMII and the Research Commercialization Path

Alberta is home to the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII), one of the three national AI institutes funded through the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy. AMII is based in Edmonton and supports AI research, talent development, and industry partnerships across the province.

AMII is a research organization, not a grant-making body for small businesses. But for Alberta businesses developing novel AI applications, AMII-connected researchers and commercialization pathways — including Mitacs research internships — can provide access to AI expertise and co-funded research that supplements provincial and federal grants. Visit amii.ca for industry partnership information.

Mitacs programs (Accelerate, Elevate) connect businesses with university researchers for funded applied research. Alberta's universities — University of Alberta, University of Calgary — are active Mitacs partners. Visit mitacs.ca for current program details.

Energy Sector AI Funding in Alberta

Alberta's energy sector is a specific context worth noting. Businesses applying AI to energy efficiency, emissions reduction, or process optimization in oil and gas have access to additional programs beyond general innovation funding:

  • TIER (Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction) fund — Provincial fund that supports emissions-reducing technologies in Alberta's energy sector, which can include AI-driven efficiency and optimization tools
  • Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) — Funds projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including AI-enabled process optimization in energy industries
  • PrairiesCan RAII — Explicitly includes energy sector AI among its priority areas

For energy businesses, the combination of sector-specific and general AI funding programs creates a more complex but richer landscape than in other industries. Verify current program status at each program's primary source before pursuing.

Municipal and NGO Programs in Alberta

Calgary and Edmonton both have active innovation ecosystems. Innovate Calgary, TEC Edmonton, and regional economic development offices offer programs and connections to funding that aren't captured in provincial or federal overviews. Industry associations in agriculture, energy, and manufacturing also facilitate access to sector-specific AI funding.
