Most statistics about missed calls come from surveys, where people estimate what they think happens. Invoca, a company that tracks and analyzes business phone calls for its clients, can measure what actually happens on the line. In July 2026 it published findings from more than 70 million real calls across 10 industries. The numbers are worth a close look for any business that relies on the phone.

Key findings

  • Only 56% of business calls get answered live. Home services businesses answered 52%.
  • When a caller is a real lead, 42% buy or book on that same call.
  • Only 36% of businesses ask the caller for the sale or appointment.
  • 75% of consumers have hung up after being on hold too long, and 79% say they'd switch to a faster competitor.

What 70 Million Phone Calls Show

Invoca's analysis covers more than 70 million calls and 600 million minutes of conversation across its customers. Across all of them, only 56% of calls were answered live. That number includes misdials and callers who hung up within seconds, so Invoca also looked at longer calls: 65% of calls lasting more than 15 seconds were answered, and 71% of calls lasting more than 30 seconds. Even counting only callers who clearly meant to reach the business, roughly 3 in 10 didn't get an answer.

The answer rate varied by industry:

  • Travel: 64%
  • Consumer services: 60%
  • Automotive: 58%
  • Financial services: 57%
  • Business services: 56%
  • Direct-to-consumer retail: 53%
  • Home services: 52%
  • Telecom: 51%

No industry answered even two out of every three calls.

The Calls That Get Answered Are Worth a Lot

The other half of the data is what makes the first half expensive. Of the calls that were answered, 38% came from genuine leads: someone ready to buy, book, or get a quote. And of those leads, 42% converted during the call itself. Home services and automotive businesses each converted 45% of their phone leads on the call, and business services converted 44%.

Put those two findings side by side. A caller who reaches a business converts at a rate most marketing channels would envy. A caller who doesn't reach anyone converts at zero, and often calls a competitor instead. The difference between answering and not answering is the difference between a 42% chance at the job and none.

Most Businesses Don't Ask for the Booking

The most surprising finding is what happens even when the call does get answered. Invoca found that only 36% of businesses asked the caller for the sale or the appointment. Home services did better at 45%; automotive matched the overall average at 36%. In most answered calls, a caller who was ready to book hung up without anyone offering to book them.

That's not a technology problem; it's a habit. A busy owner or front desk answering between other tasks often answers the question and moves on. But it means the 42% conversion rate above is being achieved with most businesses not even asking, which suggests there's more on the table than the numbers already show.

Callers Don't Wait Around

Invoca's 2026 consumer survey of U.S. buyers who had made a major purchase in the past year shows how little patience callers have. 75% said they have hung up after being put on hold for too long, and 79% said they would switch to a faster competitor. For online inquiries, 56% expected a response within an hour of submitting a form, but only 36% actually got one.

What This Means for a Small Business

Invoca's customers tend to be larger businesses, many with dedicated staff or call centres for the phone. If businesses with those resources answer only 56% of their calls, it's hard to imagine a five-person company where the owner is also doing the work doing better. That's our inference, not a finding in Invoca's data, but it's consistent with what we hear from small businesses estimating their own missed calls.

This is exactly the gap an AI voice agent is built to close:

  • Every call gets answered, including evenings, weekends, and the calls that come in while you're busy with a customer.
  • It asks for the booking every time. It's set up to offer an appointment or quote on every call where it makes sense, the step most businesses in this data skip.
  • Online leads get a call back in seconds. Our speed-to-lead system calls new leads from your website forms and ads in as little as 30 seconds, well inside the hour most people expect.

The same survey found that 83% of consumers say it matters whether an AI identifies itself (we've looked at what else customers expect from AI), so our voice agent can be set up to introduce itself as an AI assistant. We've written more about why that's a strength, not a weakness.

A Note on the Data

Invoca's call data comes from businesses on its platform, which are mostly larger U.S. companies, and its consumer survey reports U.S. respondents only. Neither includes Canadian figures. We've used it because it's one of the largest sets of measured data on business phone calls that's publicly available. Invoca's own materials also differ slightly: a June 2026 press release cited more than 60 million calls and a 37% conversion rate, while its July 2026 analysis cites more than 70 million calls and 42%. We've used the newer, larger dataset.

Frequently Asked Questions

What percentage of business phone calls get answered?

In Invoca's analysis of more than 70 million calls across 10 industries, published in July 2026, only 56% of calls were answered live. Leaving out misdials and very short hang-ups, the figure rises to 65% for calls longer than 15 seconds and 71% for calls longer than 30 seconds.

How often does an answered phone lead turn into a sale or booking?

In the same Invoca data, 42% of phone leads converted during the call itself. Home services and automotive both converted 45% of phone leads on the call, and business services converted 44%.

Do businesses ask callers to book?

Not usually. Invoca found that only 36% of businesses asked callers for the sale or the appointment. Home services businesses asked 45% of the time and automotive businesses 36% of the time.

How patient are callers when they're put on hold?

Not very. In Invoca's 2026 consumer survey, 75% said they have hung up after being put on hold for too long, and 79% said they would switch to a faster competitor.

Is this data Canadian?

No. Invoca's call data comes from businesses on its platform, mostly larger U.S. companies, and its consumer survey reports U.S. respondents. We've used it because it's one of the largest measured datasets on business phone calls available, and we've labelled it as U.S. data throughout.
